The five day bricklaying course has been designed to provide a full week of hands on bricklaying working on a number of projects all aimed at building trowel skills and speed.
All of the necessary theory work is completed as part of the hands on approach from swinging a trowel to re-pointing a wall. The first day bricklaying includes laying a bed of mortar in continuous standard thickness. The next stage is laying a line of bricks onto this mortar bed levelled and standard gauged.
Once comfortable with the basic use of the trowel a nine inch English garden wall is built to ensure understanding of using a spirit level, gauging rod and trowel. This is an excellent style of walling to build everything from ornamental garden planters to renovating the older properties with solid nine inch brickwork.
On the second day the garden wall is pointed using pointing trowels and brick jointers to a high quality. Once all this has been demolished much to your satisfaction (or maybe not???) you will move onto building a mock chimney or garden gate post with corbelled top and ornate brick toothing. This will build on the skills of ensuring square corners, gauging and levelling of the brickwork.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday continues with a choice of projects including for example a formed archway or a manhole. The final project is to build a brick and block cavity wall building from setting out the corners through to pointing the finished article.
