The do-it-yourself boom may be over but many try and fail eventually turning to the handyman with all the skills to fix that slopping shelf or cupboard doors that refuse to close. Recent surveys show that home-owners no longer want to to DIY all those jobs around the house, and over 90% of them will employ a professional handyman.

With the cost of houses and the ever increasing demands on home-owners' time, they no longer want to do it all themselves - they want a professional job and are prepred to pay for it.  Two thirds of the public say they know they will never be able to deliver a quality finish, while a quarter say that they have better things to do than try to for the unachievable.

The benefit of the handyman course is that no previous experience or qualifications are required.  It covers almost all aspects of the building trade including plumbing, plastering, bricklaying, tiling, kitchen fitting, carpentry painting and decorating. You can pick the subjects you wish to cover and the length  of the course. Once you are on a course and want to change a module for another that can be easily arranged.

The course suits people who want to move into a new career or anyone who has worked long enough and now wishes to buy their own home and renovate or redecorate it themselves.  Anyone who lets out a property in either residential or holiday home markets, will know the value of having a reliable handyman who can be trusted to attend to all those small jobs that need urgent work but do not call for a highly qualified specialist.

The handyman needs to be a diplomat as well as a skilled tradesman/woman. When visiting a prospective customer it is important to be knowledgeable and polite. These are people who will be allowing you into their home and trusting you, in most cases, with their most valuable assets - their house and its contents.  It is important for them to see that you know your trade or trades, and that you can  successfully complete the jobs on time with a minimum of fuss and at a rasonable cost.  A successful job that is completed on time will lead to numbers of referrals. A good reliable handyman is much in demand and in the happy position of having more work than hours in which to do it.

One of the advantages of doing a Handyman course is that it will give you the confidence and training to allow you to become your own boss. While the training you will receive on a course will give you, in most cases, an excellent basic knowledge, only time and experience will make you a skilled tradesman.  However, some of the training, like that for kitchen fitting and plumbing, is designed to give you the skills to specialise in those fields and will allow you to work within those specific trades.

The Handyman MultiSkills Package is designed to meet the requirements of someone looking to learn a broad range of building skills; the package is extremely flexible and can be tailored to your individual needs.

It works by combining four of our individual courses to provide you with four weeks building skills training. Our standard Handyman Multi Skills Package comprises: Bricklaying, Plastering, Wall and Floor Tiling and Plumbing. Kitchen Fitting and Carpentry can be included.

However, there is always the option to change your individual courses to make up your own unique package that caters for your particular needs. If you'd like to do this then please call us to arrange a quote based on your preferred courses. Please note, the price will be different from that quoted for our standard package.

The basic Handyman Multiskills course covers:

• Bricklaying (one week): designed for people with no experience or skills of bricklaying and wishing to undertake minor bricklaying projects. Course includes starting at foundations, brick wall and cavity, garden wall, steps, arches and door frame.
• Plastering (one week): this course covers cutting and fixing plasterboards, backing coat finishing, fixing stop, drip and angle beads. Repair to damaged ceiling and wall plaster.
• Plumbing (one week): This is a basic practical course working with copper, bending and soldering, use of plastic piping and compression joints. Pipe-work in fitting a kitchen sink, wash hand basin and bath and the removal and replacement of a radiator. Basic theory of domestic water system and heating systems.
• Wall and Floor Tiling (one week): Provides hands on knowledge on wall and floor tiling covering how to measure walls and floors set out and design layouts and provide a quote. Practical work includes tiling around basins, toilets and baths. Time is allocated to planning designs on walls and floors.
